The origin of Broken Arrow’s name is an ancient Alabama Creek village. The United States government evicted members of this village from Alabama via the Trail of Tears in the 1830s. The Creek established a new colony in Indian Territory and called it after their previous settlement in Alabama. The Creek name for the settlement was Rekackv, which means shattered arrow. The new Creek community was situated several miles south of Broken Arrow’s present-day downtown.
The city of Broken Arrow is home to several enterprises and industries. The city ranks third in the state for its concentration of manufacturers. The Simulation Systems Division of FlightSafety International, located in Broken Arrow since 1985, designs and manufactures Flight Simulators for aircraft crew training. FSI is the largest private employer in the city, employing over 675 people, of which over half are engineers.
