Jenks is a city in Tulsa County, Oklahoma, United States, and a suburb of Tulsa, in the northeastern portion of the state. It is situated between the Arkansas River and Interstate Highway 75. Jenks is one of the Oklahoma cities with the highest rate of growth.
Jenks is located in Oklahoma’s Green Country area. Due to its proximity to Tulsa, the terrain of Jenks resembles that of Tulsa, which is green with many trees and hills. Jenks was named after the owner and director of the Midland Valley Railroad, William Henry Jenks. According to a 1957 story in the Tulsa Tribune, the railroad home office instructed a townsite business representative to name a town for the director.
Jenks endured many floods from 1904 through the 1950s due to the overflow of the Arkansas River and Polecat Creek. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, flooding was severe. During one storm in the late 1920s, the water was so deep that every structure save the roof of the three-story high school was entirely submerged.
The Antiques and Arts District and the Oklahoma Aquarium are two of the most popular tourist destinations in Jenks. Downtown Jenks also features a variety of stores, including boutiques and restaurants.
The Jenks Chamber of Commerce, the Jenks Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation, and the city of Jenks are currently collaborating with businesses, artists, and community leaders to develop the Arts and Antiques District.
Shirley Bellmon, who served as the first lady of Oklahoma at the time that Jenks was known as the “Antique Capital of Oklahoma,” and the numerous shops that make their home on Main Street continue the history of Jenks being known as the “Antique Capital of Oklahoma.” Parking is free, and guests have the day to stroll about and peruse the antique, new, and repurposed products for sale. Richard Lloyd Jones Jr. Airport began operations outside Jenks in 1958. This airport is one of the busiest in the state and is the designated relief for Tulsa International Airport. It supports commercial and private aviation travel in the Tulsa metropolitan region and has contributed to the economic expansion of Jenks.
